US Calls for Economic Reforms in Pakistan Amid IMF Bailout Talks

In Washington, amidst Pakistan’s pursuit of a fresh International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout package, the United States has emphasized the importance of Pakistan expanding and prioritizing economic reforms.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts to stabilize its economy, expressing support for its endeavors to manage its substantial debt burden. Miller stated, “We encourage the government to prioritize and expand economic reforms to address its economic challenges. Our support for the country’s economic success is unwavering, and we will continue to engage with Pakistan through technical agreements, as well as through our trade and investment ties, all of which are priorities of our bilateral relationship.”

Regarding recent remarks made by the Indian defense minister, Miller affirmed the United States’ stance, emphasizing its commitment to encouraging both India and Pakistan to avoid escalation and instead seek resolution through dialogue.

In a separate context, Miller addressed concerns about freedom of expression in Pakistan, affirming the United States’ commitment to working towards its preservation.

However, when questioned about the recent visit of the Saudi foreign minister to Pakistan, Miller refrained from making specific comments. He did mention that the US Secretary of State had engaged in discussions with the Saudi FM last week to explore avenues for de-escalation in the Middle East.
