PML-N Leaders Urge Lifting of Twitter Ban, Criticize Government’s Actions

Senior leaders of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have called for the lifting of the ban on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Khawaja Saad Rafique, a prominent party leader and former railways minister, criticized the ban during the caretaker government, stating that it didn’t benefit anyone. He advised the current government to avoid actions that could make them appear foolish, emphasizing the need for political solutions to political challenges.

Javed Abbasi, another veteran of the PML-N, condemned the ban, comparing it to actions taken in dictatorships rather than democracies. He questioned the logic behind banning Twitter, likening it to banning match factories for fear of fire. Abbasi criticized the government for suppressing the truth and limiting freedom of expression.

The Interior Ministry defended the ban on X, citing the platform’s failure to comply with lawful directives from the Pakistani government. Interior Secretary Khurram Agha submitted a report to the Islamabad High Court regarding a petition challenging the ban, as Pakistan marked two months since the disruption in Twitter’s services.
