Pakistan Navy Launches First Hangor-Class Submarine

The launching ceremony of the Pakistan Navy’s first Hangor-class submarine, constructed in China’s Wuhan, marked a significant milestone. Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Naveed Ashraf graced the event, emphasizing the paramount importance of maritime security in the current geo-strategic landscape. He reiterated the Pakistan Navy’s commitment to fostering a safe maritime environment.

Highlighting the advanced capabilities of the Hangor-class submarines, Admiral Ashraf emphasized their pivotal role in upholding peace and stability in the region. He commended the relentless efforts of China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC) and expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress.

The Hangor-class submarine project is a testament to the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China. The deal, signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan, involves the acquisition of eight submarines, with four being built in China and the rest in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) under Transfer of Technology (ToT).

These submarines will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, enhancing their capability to engage targets at standoff ranges. The launching ceremony was attended by dignitaries from both Pakistan and China, including representatives from Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Company Ltd and China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company Ltd.

This development follows the induction of two Chinese Type 054 A/P frigates by the Pakistan Navy last year, further bolstering its maritime capabilities.
