Karachi Zoo Plans Relocation of Elephant Madhubala to Safari Park

The Karachi Zoo administration announced on Thursday that Madhubala, a 16-year-old elephant currently undergoing solitary confinement, will soon be relocated to Safari Park next month. This decision comes as part of efforts to provide a more suitable environment for the elephant’s well-being.

Arrangements for Madhubala’s transfer from the Karachi Zoo to Safari Park have been finalized, and she is expected to join other elephants, Sonia and Malika, upon arrival. The zoo administration confirmed that the training necessary for the elephant to enter and exit the transport container has been successfully completed.

Furthermore, a new sanctuary is being prepared for Madhubala at Safari Park in collaboration with Four Paws, a global animal welfare organization. The sanctuary is scheduled to be completed within 15 to 20 days, with the elephant’s relocation to Safari Park planned for May.

Madhubala’s arrival at Safari Park will bring the total number of elephants there to three, providing her with the opportunity to socialize and interact with other elephants, which is essential for her mental and physical well-being.

Madhubala has received care from a team of experts from Four Paws since 2022, as she had been suffering from a dental infection and pain caused by a broken tusk. This relocation is part of ongoing efforts to improve the living conditions of captive elephants in Pakistan.

Notably, Four Paws previously gained international attention for relocating Kaavan, dubbed the world’s loneliest elephant, from Islamabad to Cambodia in 2020, highlighting their commitment to improving the welfare of elephants worldwide.
