US Warns Israel Against Full-Scale Offensive in Rafah

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned against an all-out Israeli offensive on the Gaza city of Rafah, stating it would lead to “anarchy” without eliminating Hamas. As Washington intensified its pressure campaign against such action, Blinken emphasized the potential consequences during an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

In a separate conversation, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stressed Washington’s concerns about a potential offensive in a call with Israeli counterpart Tzachi Hanegbi. The White House confirmed the discussion, noting President Biden’s longstanding apprehensions over the possibility of a major military ground operation in Rafah, where over a million people have sought shelter.

Israeli airstrikes in the eastern parts of Rafah have already forced 300,000 Gazans to flee. The United States, along with other nations and top UN officials, has cautioned against a full-scale assault on Rafah, highlighting the dire humanitarian impact it could have on refugees already displaced by conflict in Gaza.

While Israel has stated its aim to minimize civilian casualties, Blinken acknowledged on “Face the Nation” that the US concurred with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement regarding civilian casualties. He also expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of a massive assault on Rafah in ending the Hamas threat.

Blinken further confirmed that the hold President Biden placed on certain weapons to Israel, amidst ongoing pressure to safeguard civilians and avoid a full-scale invasion of Rafah, is limited to 3,500 “high-capacity” bombs.
