WASHINGTON: U.S. Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller called for freedom of expression and free press within Pakistan, saying that Pakistanis should have the right to choose their own government and the direction of their nation.

“What we want is the people of Pakistan to able to decide the future of the country including their own government,” Miller stated on Tuesday at a press conference in Washington.

The State Department spokesperson reiterated his government’s position on the value of press freedom. And freedom of expression in light of recent events. Which included the expulsion of the New York Times bureau chief from Pakistan. And reports of journalists exposing purported election tampering.

According to Miller, Pakistan should respect these rights just like any other country in the world. “We want Pakistan to uphold the freedom of expression. And the right to a free press, just like we do everywhere else in the world.”

In response to a query about supposed US meddling in Pakistani political affairs, Miller said the claims were untrue. “I can only take a stand and speak the truth. “Those accusations are untrue and inaccurate,” he declared.

He expressed the wish of the United States of America for the people of Pakistan to be free to choose their own destiny, including their form of government.
