$10,000 Compensation for Minor Injuries, Higher Payouts for Seriously Injured

Singapore Airlines has taken a proactive step by offering $10,000 in compensation to passengers who suffered minor injuries during a recent flight hit by violent turbulence.

Fatal Incident on Flight SQ321

On May 20, 2024, flight SQ321 from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence, resulting in the death of a 73-year-old British man and injuries to several passengers and crew members.

Compensation Offers

The airline has sent out emails offering $10,000 in compensation to passengers who sustained minor injuries during the incident. For those who suffered more serious injuries, Singapore Airlines has invited them to discuss a compensation offer tailored to their specific circumstances.

Advance Payment for Seriously Injured Passengers

Passengers who require long-term medical care and have requested financial assistance will receive an advance payment of $25,000 to address their immediate needs. This amount will be part of the final compensation they will receive.

Additional Support

Singapore Airlines has also offered:

  • Full airfare refunds to all passengers on the flight, including those who were not injured
  • Delay compensation in accordance with European Union or United Kingdom regulations
  • Immediate expenses coverage of Sg$1,000 ($740) to each passenger departing Bangkok to their final destination
  • Medical expenses coverage for injured passengers
  • Arranged flights for family members to visit injured passengers in Bangkok

Airlines’ Liability

Under the Montreal Convention, airlines are liable for damages resulting from injury or death of passengers while on an airplane.
