Russian Military Jet Crashes in North Ossetia

Fatal Training Flight Accident

The Russian defence ministry announced on Tuesday that a Sukhoi-34 jet crashed during a training flight in the Caucasus region of North Ossetia, resulting in the deaths of two people on board.

Crash Details

The defence ministry revealed that the jet crashed in a mountainous zone, with no damage reported on the ground. The exact timing of the accident was not disclosed.

Technical Problem Suspected

According to the ministry, a technical problem is believed to have caused the crash, and an investigation has been launched to determine the underlying reason behind the accident.

Location and Context

North Ossetia, which shares a border with ex-Soviet Georgia, is approximately 800 kilometres (500 miles) from the front line in Ukraine. This region has seen recent military activity, with Ukraine targeting a military airfield near Mozdok with drones on June 8. However, three of the drones were shot down, and it was the first such attack in North Ossetia since Russia launched its military operation against Ukraine in February 2022.

Investigation Ongoing

The defence ministry’s investigation into the crash is currently underway, and further details are expected to be released as the probe progresses.
