Ronaldo’s Absence Marks Historic Shift in Portugal’s Soccer Lineup

In a historic shift, Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from Portugal’s match against Sweden marked the first time in 17 years that another player donned the No 7 jersey.

Bruma capitalized on Ronaldo’s unexpected absence by scoring a goal just 11 minutes after replacing Leao.

The 29-year-old player scored twice, contributing to Portugal’s 4-0 victory over Sweden, ending his four-month international scoring drought dating back to October 2018.

Despite Ronaldo’s absence, Portugal dominated Sweden, securing a 5-2 victory in their first match of the year, showcasing their resilience and superiority.

Senior players, including Ronaldo, were part of the 23-man roster selected by RTM but were rested during the match.

During his break, Cristiano Ronaldo chose to spend time with his family in Saudi Arabia. He is expected to return to the field on Tuesday for Portugal’s friendly match against Slovenia.

Ronaldo’s absence signals a transition for the national team as Portugal moves forward. Despite this, the iconic striker remains committed to the national soccer team until the next European Championship in 2024.
