PTI-Backed Sunni Ittehad Council Nominates Mahmood Khan Achakzai as Presidential Candidate Against Asif Zardari

The Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has announced Mahmood Khan Achakzai, chief of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), as its presidential nominee, challenging Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

Achakzai, who secured a National Assembly seat from Balochistan’s NA-266 constituency, was nominated by the SIC to contest for the top constitutional post against Zardari, who is supported by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other coalition parties.

PTI founder Imran Khan, currently in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, has urged PTI lawmakers to support Achakzai in the presidential election.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan has confirmed Achakzai’s nomination, following a PTI delegation’s meeting with Achakzai and Balochistan National Party (Mengal) chief Akhtar Mengal earlier this week to seek their support.

The presidential election, scheduled for March 9, will see the nomination papers submitted by noon today (Saturday), with the final list of candidates published on March 6 after scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations.

Dr. Arif Alvi’s term as president has ended, but he remains in office until his successor is elected. The oath-taking ceremony for the new president will be conducted after the election.
