PCB Appoints Babar Azam as New T20I Captain, Replacing Shaheen Afridi

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the replacement of Shaheen Afridi as captain of the Pakistan Men’s national Cricket team in T20Is, with Babar Azam appointed as the new white-ball captain, succeeding Shaheen Shah Afridi.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the PCB explained that the decision stems from their commitment to effectively manage player workloads, aiming to sustain peak performance levels. Recognizing the need for rotation and adequate rest, especially for key players like Shaheen Afridi, the board aims to ensure the longevity of their careers in the sport.

While acknowledging Shaheen Afridi’s stellar performance as a star fast bowler, leading Pakistan’s pace attack over the years, the board emphasized the importance of rotation and rest to maintain his peak performance. This decision aligns with the board’s commitment to safeguarding the longevity of players, particularly fast bowlers, given their injury timelines in the past two years.

The PCB highlighted the significance of workload management to ensure that Pakistan’s main bowlers remain at the top of their game. The board referenced past instances, such as the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, where the team faced challenges due to injuries and the unavailability of key bowlers like Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah.

By appointing Babar Azam as the new captain, the PCB aims to ensure that Pakistan’s primary bowlers remain in prime condition, ready to deliver impactful performances when called upon. This strategic decision reflects the board’s commitment to maintaining a strong and competitive national cricket team.
