New Smoking Cessation Clinic Opens at LRH to Aid Smokers

PESHAWAR: A smoking cessation clinic has been established at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) in Peshawar to help those who are addicted to cigarettes.

According to Dr. Ehtesham of LRH’s Pulmonology Department, “The clinic has been established at the OPD (Outdoor Patient Department). And services are provided from 12:00pm to 2:00pm every Monday.”

He stated that the consultation meeting on the draft action plan proposed legislative reforms for e-cigarettes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He informed participants that the smoking cessation clinic is still in its early stages and will primarily serve hospital employees.

Dr. Ehtesham stated that smokers are treated with two separate medications based on their nicotine level and addiction, as well as the severity of withdrawal symptoms.

He stated that approximately 23% of Pakistan’s population smoked. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were approximately 24 million smokers in the country in 2018, but the figure has now risen to 27 million, he added.

Participants in the meeting emphasized the dangers of smoking. Particularly the modern mode of addiction, which includes e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and sheesha. The participants also proposed holding seminars in educational institutions to sensitize students.

It was suggested that anti-smoking messages written in graffiti on the backs of rickshaws. Buses, bus stops, and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations.
