 New AI Tech Developed to Detect Heart Failure Earlier

AI Technology to Identify Heart Failure Patients Earlier

Researchers at the University of Leeds have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm, Find-HF, to detect early symptoms of heart failure in patients. This innovation could lead to earlier treatment and improved quality of life for those affected.

Training the Algorithm

The research team, led by Prof Chris Gale, trained the AI algorithm using patient records from over 565,000 UK adults. They then tested it on a database of 106,026 records from Taiwan National University Hospital. The AI accurately predicted patients at high risk of developing heart failure and those likely to be hospitalized within five years.

Early Warning System

The researchers propose using Find-HF as an early warning system for GPs to test and diagnose patients earlier. This could potentially bring diagnoses forward by two years, enabling timely interventions and improved patient outcomes.

Improving Patient Outcomes

Dr Ramesh Nadarajah emphasized the importance of early detection, stating that many patients receive their diagnosis too late, reducing the effectiveness of disease-modifying treatments. The AI technology aims to identify heart failure patients earlier, preventing hospital admissions and death, and enhancing quality of life.

British Heart Foundation Support

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) funded this study, recognizing the potential of AI in improving heart health. With over one million people in the UK living with heart failure, this technology could make a significant impact on patient care.
