Experts Warn: AI Risks Deepening Inequalities in Society

Artificial intelligence (AI) is all the buzz at major technology conferences like Web Summit in Doha. While it promises incredible advancements, experts warn that it could worsen existing inequalities in our world.

Ayo Tometi, co-creator of Black Lives Matter, highlights the risk of biases being ingrained in AI technologies. For instance, predictive policing tools have disproportionately targeted people of color, perpetuating racial biases.

These tools use algorithms to predict crime hotspots or individuals likely to commit crimes. While they aim to reduce crime rates, they often overlook systemic racism within the criminal justice system.

Faulty facial recognition scans have led to wrongful arrests, revealing how AI technologies struggle to recognize diverse faces accurately.

It’s crucial to address these biases to ensure fair and equitable deployment of AI. By doing so, we can harness the potential of AI to benefit everyone and create a more just society.
