People frequently neglect to brush their teeth because of busy schedules, late nights, travel, or other reasons, but the consequences of this behavior are worse than you may think.

A dentist from the United Kingdom named Dr. Rhona Eskander states that the longest a person should go without brushing their teeth is twenty-four hours, after which “plaque buildup becomes significant, increasing the risk of dental issues.”

You “may suffer from severe oral pain, prolonged bad breath, gum disease, tooth loss, and extensive tooth decay” if you neglect to brush your teeth. Untreated dental problems in severe situations can even affect general health “says Eskander.

When you neglect to brush your teeth, bacteria in your mouth can thrive on food particles, produce acids, and cause tartar accumulation, which can result in hardened dental plaque. Only a dentist with advanced training can extract this, according to Eskander.

“Within hours, plaque begins to form on your teeth,” she explains. Plaque is a bacterial film that is sticky and can cause gum disease and cavities. You might experience a fuzzy feeling on your teeth after not brushing for about a day, which is a sign of plaque accumulation.”

She continued by saying that flossing, which should be done “once a day,” can help keep all areas of your teeth free from plaque by clearing food particles that “brushing alone can’t reach” in between your teeth.

Bad breath

Bad breath can result from not using minty-fresh toothpaste because oral bacteria “release odorous compounds when they break down food particles,” according to Eskander.

Try a quick “lick and sniff” test to see if your breath is stout.


“Lick the inside of your wrist, let it dry for a few seconds, and then smell it,” Eskander clarified. It might be the source of your bad breath if it smells bad. A different technique is to put dental floss in between your back teeth, take a whiff, and look for any unpleasant odors.”

She goes on to say that hydrated and practicing proper dental hygiene can help avoid bad breath.

Eskander emphasizes the importance of brushing your teeth to keep them white. And bright because “stains from food, beverages, and tobacco” can build up quickly and cause “tooth discolouration”.

The degree of staining can be affected by variables such as oral hygiene and the condition of the tooth enamel.



“Generally, foods and beverages like red wine, coffee, tea, berries, and dark sodas may cause immediate staining,” the spokesperson stated. She also mentioned that significant stains may take a few days to show up. So regular brushing and dental cleanings can help minimize these stains.

According to Eskander, regular tooth brushing can reduce the risk of developing long-term gum disease because plaque can cause gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease, if left untreated.



She continued: “If left unchecked, it can progress to periodontitis, leading to tooth loss.”

Gum bleeding during brushing or flossing, swollen, red, or sore gums, and receding gums that make teeth appear longer are all signs of gum disease.

Additional signs and symptoms include loose teeth, painful chewing. Altered partial denture fit, gums and teeth separating, and persistent bad breath.

Seeing a dentist “promptly” is important, according to the dental expert. Who also mentioned that early intervention can stop gum disease from worsening.
