Australia Raises Financial Requirements for International Students

Australia announced on Wednesday that it would raise the financial requirements for international students applying for visas and cautioned several colleges about fraudulent student recruitment practices, as part of efforts to manage record migration levels.

Starting Friday, international students must demonstrate savings of at least A$29,710 ($19,576) to obtain their visa, marking the second increase in about seven months. This requirement was previously raised from A$21,041 to A$24,505 in October.

These measures come in response to a surge in migration following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions in 2022, which intensified pressure on an already strained rental market. In addition to increasing financial requirements, the government has tightened English language requirements for student visas and is taking steps to prevent students from extending their stays.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil revealed that warning letters had been issued to 34 education providers for engaging in “non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices.” Those found guilty could face up to two years in jail and be prohibited from recruiting students.
